Telepsychiatry

Mental Health Care From the Comfort of Your Own Space

BluePrint Mental Health offers telepsychiatry services for adults who prefer to meet with their psychiatric provider virtually rather than in person.

Telepsychiatry allows you to connect with your provider through secure electronic communication from a private location that is convenient for you. Depending on your clinical needs and circumstances, your provider can conduct psychiatric evaluations, follow-up appointments, medication management, and other appropriate mental health services through telepsychiatry.

Our goal is to make accessing mental health care more convenient while maintaining the same professional standards of care expected during an in-person visit.

How Telepsychiatry Works

A telepsychiatry appointment is conducted through a secure technology platform selected and used by BluePrint Mental Health.

Before your appointment, our team will provide the information you need to access your virtual visit.

The process generally includes:

1. Schedule Your Appointment

Contact BluePrint Mental Health to request a telepsychiatry appointment. Our team will review your needs, availability, and eligibility for virtual care.

2. Complete Required Forms

Before your appointment, you may be asked to complete intake, consent, demographic, medical history, and other required forms.

3. Prepare Your Device

You may use a compatible computer, tablet, or smartphone, depending on the telehealth platform being used. Your device should have a working camera and microphone when video visits are required and a reliable internet connection.

4. Join Your Appointment

You will receive instructions for accessing your appointment. Please join from a quiet and private location and be prepared to participate without unnecessary interruptions.

5. Meet With Your Provider

Your provider will discuss your concerns, review relevant information, assess your mental health needs, and determine an appropriate treatment plan based on your individual circumstances.

What Services May Be Available Through Telepsychiatry?

Telepsychiatry may be appropriate for certain services provided by BluePrint Mental Health, including:

  • Initial psychiatric evaluations
  • Follow-up psychiatric appointments
  • Medication management
  • Mental health assessments
  • Treatment planning
  • Supportive psychotherapy and psychoeducation
  • Ongoing psychiatric care

Not every service, condition, or clinical situation is appropriate for telepsychiatry. Your provider will determine whether virtual care is clinically appropriate for you.

Is Telepsychiatry Right for You?

Telepsychiatry may be a convenient option if you:

  • Prefer to receive care from home or another private location
  • Have difficulty traveling to an office
  • Prefer virtual appointments
  • Need ongoing psychiatric follow-up
  • Have access to an appropriate device and reliable internet connection

Your provider will consider your individual needs and circumstances when determining whether telepsychiatry is appropriate.

In some situations, an in-person evaluation or other level of care may be more appropriate.

Preparing for Your Telepsychiatry Appointment

For the best experience, we recommend that you:

Choose a Private Location

Attend your appointment from a quiet, private room where other people cannot overhear your conversation.

Headphones may provide additional privacy when appropriate.

Use a Personal Device When Possible

Whenever possible, use your own computer, tablet, or smartphone rather than a shared or public device.

Use a Secure Internet Connection

Avoid public Wi-Fi when discussing sensitive health information. A private, password-protected internet connection is preferable.

Check Your Equipment

Before your appointment, make sure your:

  • Camera is working
  • Microphone is working
  • Speakers or headphones are working
  • Device is adequately charged
  • Internet connection is reliable
  • Browser or application is updated as required

Be Ready at Your Appointment Time

Please join your appointment a few minutes early when possible so you have time to address technical issues before the visit begins.

Privacy and Security

Your privacy is important to us.

Telepsychiatry appointments involve the electronic transmission of health information, which means there are privacy and security considerations associated with using electronic communication technologies.

BluePrint Mental Health uses telehealth technology selected for the delivery of healthcare services and follows applicable privacy and security requirements.

Patients should also take reasonable steps to protect their privacy by attending appointments from private locations, using secure devices and connections, and avoiding public environments when discussing sensitive health information.

For additional information about your healthcare privacy rights, please review our Notice of Privacy Practices and Privacy Policy.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that patients take steps such as using private locations, personal devices where possible, secure connections, updated software, and other reasonable safeguards when participating in telehealth.

Telepsychiatry Consent

Depending on applicable law and the circumstances of your care, BluePrint Mental Health may obtain informed consent before providing telepsychiatry services.

Before beginning telepsychiatry, you may receive information concerning:

  • How the telepsychiatry visit will be conducted
  • Benefits and limitations of virtual care
  • Privacy and security considerations
  • Alternative options for care
  • What to do if technical problems occur
  • What to do in an emergency
  • Other information required by applicable law

Telehealth informed-consent requirements vary by jurisdiction, and behavioral-health providers should ensure that required consent is obtained and appropriately documented.

Your Location During a Telepsychiatry Visit

For telepsychiatry appointments, you may be required to confirm your physical location at the beginning of the visit.

This is important because healthcare licensure and telehealth requirements can depend on the location of the patient at the time healthcare services are provided.

BluePrint Mental Health currently advertises telepsychiatry services for patients in Texas. Eligibility for telepsychiatry will be confirmed based on applicable licensing, regulatory, clinical, and practice requirements.

If you are temporarily outside Texas or have traveled to another state, please inform our office before your appointment.

The Texas Board of Nursing states that nursing practice through telehealth is considered to occur where the patient is located and that providers must comply with the laws governing practice in the jurisdiction where the patient is located.

Prescriptions and Medication Management

When clinically appropriate, your provider may manage medications through telepsychiatry in accordance with applicable federal and state laws, professional standards, and prescribing requirements.

A telepsychiatry appointment does not automatically guarantee that a prescription will be issued or renewed. Medication decisions depend on your individual clinical circumstances and your provider’s assessment.

Additional requirements may apply to certain medications, including controlled substances.

If Technology Stops Working

Technology problems can occasionally interrupt a telepsychiatry appointment.

If your video or audio connection is interrupted, BluePrint Mental Health may attempt to reconnect using the available contact or communication method established for your care.

If the appointment cannot be completed virtually, your provider may determine whether the visit should be rescheduled, continued through another appropriate method, or addressed through another form of care.

Please make sure our office has your current contact information.

Accessibility and Accommodations

BluePrint Mental Health is committed to providing accessible services and effective communication.

If you need an accommodation or assistance to participate in a telepsychiatry appointment, please notify our office before your appointment whenever possible.

Depending on your needs and applicable requirements, reasonable accommodations or auxiliary aids and services may be available.

Please see our Accessibility Statement for additional information.

Telepsychiatry Is Not an Emergency Service

BluePrint Mental Health does not provide emergency or crisis care through telepsychiatry.

Our website, email, contact forms, and routine appointment communications are not continuously monitored for emergencies.

If you are experiencing a psychiatric or medical emergency, believe you may be in immediate danger, or believe you may harm yourself or another person, call 911, go to the nearest emergency department, or call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Do not wait for a response from BluePrint Mental Health during an emergency.

Important Limitations of Telepsychiatry

Telepsychiatry can provide convenient access to mental health services, but it has limitations.

A virtual appointment may not be appropriate when:

  • An in-person physical or medical evaluation is necessary
  • There is an acute psychiatric emergency
  • The provider determines that virtual care does not adequately meet your clinical needs
  • Technology problems prevent an appropriate clinical evaluation
  • Another level of care is clinically indicated

Your provider will determine the appropriate course of care based on your individual circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a computer for telepsychiatry?

Not necessarily. Depending on the telehealth platform used by BluePrint Mental Health, you may be able to participate using a smartphone, tablet, or computer.

Can I attend my appointment from work?

You should participate from a private location where you can speak freely without others overhearing your conversation. A workplace or public environment may not provide adequate privacy.

Can someone else join my telepsychiatry appointment?

Another person may participate when appropriate, but your provider may need to confirm that you consent to their participation. Additional requirements may apply depending on the circumstances.

Will my telepsychiatry appointment be recorded?

Telepsychiatry sessions should not be recorded by patients or other participants without appropriate permission or consent. BluePrint Mental Health will follow applicable requirements concerning any recording, storage, or transmission of telehealth information.

What happens if I need in-person care?

If your provider determines that an in-person evaluation or another level of care is more appropriate, they may recommend that you seek in-person care or another appropriate healthcare resource.
